Pesticide trainings

Winegrowers, in partnership with the Washington State Department of Agriculture, will offer three trainings in 2018, primarily designed to broaden and progress worker and employer knowledge as well as develop core skills in the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards related to pesticide use in the workplace.

WPS Hands-on Pesticides Handler Trainer

Training Description:
This eight hour workshop focuses on training unlicensed pesticide handlers in safe, legal, skillful pesticide handling techniques. Content also provides excellent continuing education for licensed individuals.  Instructors provide practical, hands-on training in pesticide mixing and loading, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, respirator use and maintenance and PPE decontamination. The workshop exceeds the updated federal and state training requirements of the EPA’s Agricultural Worker Protection Standard (WPS). WPS Handler Training Verification Cards are issued upon completion. Six re-certification credits are also offered to certified applicators.

Participant Requirements:

  • A minimum of 25 participants must ATTEND the workshop
  • If less than 25 are in attendance, the workshop will be cancelled onsite, and refunds will be subsequently issued

Requirements to receive re-certification credits and WSDA Verification Card:

  • Pesticide re-certification credits will be issued based on attendance (a maximum of six credits for the course)
  • Handler training verification cards will only be issued to those who fully attend the course

Training Description:
This two-day interactive workshop develops and reinforces knowledge and skills required of qualified trainers who provide training to pesticide handler and fieldworker employees.  Participants rotate through four training modules, advancing their understanding of federal and state mandated pesticide safety topics while practicing instructional strategies for engaging adult learners.  Participants who successfully complete the mock training portion of the workshop will qualify as WSDA Certified Trainers and will be authorized to issue Worker Protection Standard worker and handler training verification cards.  Nine credits are offered for licensed individuals. 

 A “Certified Trainer” card is sent to trainers within 4 weeks after the workshop.

Participant Requirements:

  • Participants are required to have attended a WSDA pesticide handlers training within the last three years, currently hold a valid pesticide applicator’s  license, or have previously attended a WSDA Train the Trainer workshop before signing up for this workshop and want to take it as a refresher course.
  • A minimum of 16 participants must ATTEND the workshop  
  • If less than 16 are in attendance, the workshop will be cancelled onsite, and refunds will be subsequently issued.  

Requirements to receive WSDA Verification Certification:

  • Attend entire 2-day workshop
  • Pass Knowledge Assessment with 80% or higher
  • Present 5 minutes pesticide mock safety training

Airblast Sprayer Calibration & Best Management Practices

Training Description:
This training is VINEYARD-ONLY, no tree fruit.

In this day-long workshop, participants are provided with the latest information, tools, and technology required to confidently and effectively perform optimum sprayer calibration.  Classroom and in-field demonstrations and activities familiarize participants with procedures and techniques to proficiently calibrate and configure a pesticide sprayer in response to application site conditions (canopy size, time of season, adjoining sensitive areas, etc) with the intent to increase deposition, minimize drift, and reduce pesticide volume.  Participants will gain hand-on experience using actual application equipment during a mock calibration.  Six pesticide credits are offered to those who successfully complete this workshop.    

Participant Requirements:

  • A minimum of 20 participants per each language must ATTEND the workshop
  • If less than 20 are in attendance, the workshop will be cancelled onsite, and refunds will be subsequently issued.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing—part of the event will be conducted outside
